Pont du Gard
The Pont du Gard is a Roman aqueduct set between Nimes and Avignon in southern France. Pont du Gard spans three levels at about 275 meters long and 50 meters high. At the top level is a tunnel that takes you from the east bank to the west bank of the Gard river.
We got there just at sunset, so although the tunnel was closed we witnessed a breathtaking view over the Gard valley. I had forgotten my camera, so I came by here on the return trip as well to take some more pictures (in addition to Kate's wonderful ones).
Visitors can usually swim in the water running beneath the aqueduct. I had been here in ninth grade and gone swimming. (It was awesome!! I love swimming in rocky streams.)
However, this time the water level was low and the bed seemed partly dried up. No one was swimming, probably also because it was a colder time of the year, but also perhaps because of the construction on one side of the river.
