| The Basilica di San Marco, embodying a typical Byzantine architectural style, was built from 1043 to 1070. This is the third attempt to build a church on this spot. The first was built starting in the year 829 (ending in 836), and burnt to the ground in 979. The second was erected soon afterwards, but was torn down decades later. This is the third and lasting construction standing to inspire us to this day. | |||||||||||||

| The ever-so-famous pigeons that swarm the piazza, getting fed endlessly by tourists. Locals sit around in carts and sell birdseed, just so tourists can have their picture taken with hundreds of pigeons fluttering around them and sitting on them. It's pretty gross, though, so I wasn't down for that. | |||||||||||||
