The Process of Harvesting Carob Beans.....

We did this daily for about a week, six hours a day.  The work wasn't too bad after we got used to it, but it was really monotonous and boring.   We played every game imaginable to keep ourselves occupied (such as:  "If you could sing like any ten rock stars, who would they be...).  After our week of carob picking we know just about every single detail about each others lives, familes, romances, etc.  Kate and I knew each other well before, but now we know each other EXTREMELY well.  When you spend that many hours picking up beans, you have to come up with SOMETHING to occupy the time.

THE BEAN.  Carob beans are used to make non-dairy chocolate for vegans or diabetics.  The shells are often ground up and used in animal feed.  Needless to say, we have seen ENOUGH carob beans to last us the rest of our lives.

Knocking the dry beans out of the tree for collection....

And finally, when our buckets are full, pouring them dutifully into grain sacks for later pick-up by the farmer in a truck.
